MF Tomlinson’s ‘A Cloud’ is a hit of breezy nostalgia

MF Tomlinson’s new track ‘A Cloud’ wouldn’t sound out of place on a Bob Dylan record – although it’s undeniably as at home in 2022 as it would be in 1962.

The track, clocking in at three and a half minutes, conjures up feelings people have always felt – in Tomlinson’s words, it’s about longing for something that is unattainable, while still appreciating the beauty in life, even if it is lacking many of the things you desire. In the current day and age, this feels particularly poignant – following the last two years, the song is undeniably hopeful, while still being grounded in reality, and will undoubtedly bring joy to Tomlinson’s fans.

The meaning of the song, coupled with Tomlinson’s unbeatable lyricism and idyllic arrangements, makes for a track that is perfect for hazy summer evenings. It feels almost like a soundtrack to memories you will one day be nostalgic for – the mark of an excellent songwriter.

The track is further evidence of MF Tomlinson’s talent, the likes of which has already secured him invitations to support the likes of Dry Cleaning and Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, as well as some excellent headline slots at venues like The Shacklewell Arms.

‘A Cloud’ is also the first we’ve heard from MF Tomlinson’s new album, which is set to be released via PRAH Recordings in early 2023. It’s a brilliant introduction to Tomlinson’s new work, following his critically acclaimed ‘Strange Time’, which he released himself in 2021. It is an incredibly strong comeback for the artist, full of his usual wit and aphorisms.
