Grandmas House announce debut album

Long-time favourites post-punk darlings Grandmas House have announced that they will – finally – release a debut album. Fans of the quirky four-piece have been waiting for this news for some time. They have been part of Bristol’s music scene for years and have often appeared high up on festival line-ups.

Baby You’re A Winner will be out on 21st August via Brace Yourself Records. The title track been released already, showing off punchy guitar riffs and lead singer Yas’ distinctive vocals.

WAX spoke to Yas, Zoë, Poppy and Polly ahead of their announcement about what fans can expect from the new album.

Tell us about the new album, what can people expect?

We’re so excited about our debut! We feel like it sounds exactly how we wanted it to be. People can expect the unexpected, the album definitely takes you on a journey and every song feels like it has its own little world. We tried to push ourselves as much as possible when writing and recording this album, we didn’t just want to rush a bunch of filler songs out, we wanted to love every song and we think you can really hear that.

You’ve been part of the Bristol music scene for years now. How does it influence your sound to be part of that scene?

I think it’s a huge influence especially when we first started. Having that community of loads of other bands when we started the band was crucial. Everyone went to each other’s gigs no matter the genre, which means we got to see so much different music, which all inspires you and bleeds into your own writing for sure. Seeing your friends being so passionate about what they’re doing is very inspiring. I don’t think we’d be a band right now if it wasn’t for Bristol.

It took you a while to do an album. What’s gone into that process and why now?

It finally felt right. We didn’t want to force an album if it wasn’t going to be exactly what we wanted it to be. There is a huge pressure in the music industry about having to release an album as soon as possible but we believe in quality over quantity.

People that have been there from the start and have supported our other releases over the years will be able to hear our progress in everything we’ve released. I think that’s what makes us so real and relatable – you can come on this journey with us. We’re a band that started with minimal musical knowledge, which is reflected in our music (not in a bad way!) and this has now grown into us being a lot more confident with our playing, writing and knowing exactly what kind of music we want to make and how to make it.

Is the album mostly new material or can fans expect to see old favourites?

It’s almost all fresh material. If you’ve seen us play live very recently you might have gotten a lil sneak peek of a few album songs but other than that there’s only a couple songs that are staples in our set list at the moment.

When can people see/hear the new album live?

We’ll be announcing lots of very exciting dates very soon! Follow us on our socials and sign up to our mailing list to be the first one to hear all the news.
