Sometimes a track comes around and simply knocks you sideways – often you can’t work out how or why this happens. On this overcast June morning, this is what has happened to me after hearing this new stomper from the gritty Bristol/Manchester duo Getdown Services.
Founded by Josh Law and Ben Sadler, the group have amassed a cult following for their groove riding style, combining old school guitar work with a clever and often satirical lyrical landscape.
Topping their new EP, Crumbs on Breakfast Records which showcases a tasty selection of B sides and wild rarities from the recording sessions that gave us their debut album Crisps last year, ‘I Got Views’ is a master stroke; an angry ode to the day to day annoyances of everyday life.
This collection of new work comes with the announcement of a headline UK tour, one which looks to be their biggest to date and an extremely hot ticket if you’re looking for a sweaty, raucous rock and roll show.
The track opens with the ever-exciting glam rock style blues grind, thundering through your speakers and making you want to get up and move. You can hear the guys tilting their hats to 70s heroes like Sweet and T-Rex, until the vocals roll in. With profanities booming out left right and centre, you feel the anger and the general care-free attitude of this wild and wacky duo.
The overriding sentiment ‘I got views and I choose to share ‘em I don’t really care if you listen to ’em’ sums this track up and lays down a-tongue in cheek poke at modern life. The cadence of the vocal sounds similar to that of both Ian and Baxter Dury, yet with more of a ‘two fingers’ to the song’s subject.
There’s a definite feeling of excitement around Getdown Services shown by significant support from big names like Radio X, NME and Rough Trade and for good reason. I guarantee their electric and boisterous style will keep you dancing all the way to one of their headline performances in the winter.
