Electro-punk seems to be on the up – it’s the way the ethos of punk has adapted to the twenty-first century, mixing the old school with the new school, with just as much anarchic chaos. In that sense, nobody is doing electro-punk as well as Lip Critic, who have just released their newest single – ‘In The Wawa (Convinced I Am God)’, which, by the way, is a great title.
The track is named for a chain of petrol stations (or gas stations) in the United States, and perfectly mixes the nihilistic, wall of sound associated with punk music with instrumentalism that wouldn’t sound entirely out of place in a nineties rave – or even something more modern. The result is an excellent track that combines all of these musical elements, and packages them into a song that captures the struggle of being authentic in a postmodern, capitalist world – which, of course, makes the name seem even more apt.
‘In The Wawa’ comes ahead of the band’s newest album, Hex Dealer, which is due to be released in May via Partisan Records, and follows the equally impressive trifecta of singles in ‘It’s The Magic’, ‘The Heart’ and ‘Milky Max’. The band are certainly blessing us at the moment, and the full album looks to be just as incredible.
Lip Critic are due to headline several shows across the UK this summer, and if you have the chance to see them, take it, because they’re sort of like if a first-wave punk got a hold of Ableton – which frankly sounds like a blast.
